Why countries require passport buffer
Airlines can deny boarding, and border officers can send you back, if your passport is too close to expiry. Understanding the rule saves ruined holidays.
The 6-month rule
The most common rule — the USA, Canada, Thailand and most of Asia require your passport to be valid for at least 6 months after your return date.
The 3-month rule
Schengen countries (France, Germany, Spain…) require only 3 months beyond your planned departure from the Schengen area.
Entry vs return
Some countries only check validity at entry, others at both entry and exit. Always check both dates.
