Facing = the direction you look when standing at the entrance looking outward. Length = the side facing the entrance.
How Vastu works
Vastu maps the home onto a 9×9 grid (the Vastu Purusha Mandala). Every direction is owned by a deity and element — place rooms where their energy supports the activity, and the whole house thrives.
Eight directions, eight energies
North = wealth (Kubera), South = fame (Yama), East = health (Indra/Sun), West = progress (Varuna) — with four corners in between.
The sacred NE corner
Ishanya, the north-east, is the most sacred zone. Keep it open, light and uncluttered — never place heavy weight or a toilet there.
Shape is destiny
Square and slightly rectangular plots carry balanced energy. Long, tapering or irregular plots create "doshas" — correctable with remedies.
Reading the zone map
Each direction has ideal rooms and rooms to avoid. The list below updates for your facing and marks each zone accordingly.
- • North-East (Ishanya) — pooja room, meditation, water features, open space. Never toilets, kitchens or heavy closets.
- • South-East (Agneya) — the fire corner: kitchen, boiler, hot appliances.
- • South-West (Nairitya) — the heavy corner: master bedroom, storage, wardrobes.
- • North-West (Vayavya) — the air corner: guest room, study, children's room, entry from the west side.
- • Centre (Brahmasthan) — keep it open and clear; no walls, pillars or toilets in the heart of the home.
Balance is a daily practice
Vastu is one lens on a space — pair it with numerology for a full-personality home check.
