Suit jacket sizing
Jacket sizes have two parts: the chest number and the length fitting.
The number
US jackets are sized in even numbers: 38, 40, 42… based on chest measurement plus ease.
Short / Regular / Long
Chosen by height — 38S, 38R, 38L all have the same chest but different jacket lengths and sleeve drops.
Proportions
Your height also shifts the sleeve length — about 1" difference per length step.
Trouser sizing
Trousers use two numbers: waist × inseam (e.g. 34 × 32).
- • Waist — measure at the natural waistline, where you'd wear the trousers.
- • Inseam — from the crotch seam down the inside leg to the shoe sole.
- • Break — a full break (trouser resting on the shoe) needs +0.5" inseam; no-break needs −0.5".
- • Tailoring — most suits need minor alterations; buy to fit the largest measurement and take in the rest.
