The employee’s gross is only part of the story: employers match FICA (6.2% SS + 1.45% Medicare), pay 6.0% FUTA on the first $7,000 (often reduced to 0.6% after credits), state unemployment (SUI, typically 1–5%) and whatever benefits they fund. The burden rate is (total cost / gross) − 1.
