How it’s calculated

RER = 70 × weight(kg)^0.75 then DER = RER × life-stage factor

Resting Energy Requirement (RER) is the energy a dog needs at complete rest — the baseline used by veterinary nutritionists. Daily Energy Requirement (DER) multiplies RER by a factor for growth, neuter status and activity. Food amount = DER ÷ kcal per cup. These factors follow the WSAVA / AAHA feeding guidelines used by most veterinary clinics.
