Why taxi fares vary so much
Every city meters differently — some charge per mile, some per kilometer, and most add time-based charges for traffic. Surcharges and tips complete the picture.
Distance + time
Most taxis charge both per mile/km and per minute in slow traffic. A short ride in gridlock can cost as much as a longer free-flowing one.
Surcharges
Night rides, peak hours and airport pickups add fixed fees. NYC adds a peak congestion surcharge; London charges more after 8pm.
Tips & rounding
In the US, 15–20% is standard; in most of Asia and Europe, tipping is minimal or optional. Always round up for cash.
