Assumes all drives are the same size. For mixed sizes, RAID uses the smallest drive as the base unit in most configurations.

RAID levels at a glance
Choose based on your balance of speed, capacity and safety.
RAID 0
Striping — all capacity, fastest speed, but zero fault tolerance. One dead drive loses everything.
RAID 5
Striped with parity — survives one drive failure while using just one drive's worth of space.
RAID 10
Mirrored stripes — fast and safe, surviving one drive in each mirror pair. Half capacity.
Fault tolerance explained
How many drives can fail without losing data?
- • RAID 0 — 0 drives. No redundancy at all.
- • RAID 1 / 5 — 1 drive. Survive a single failure.
- • RAID 6 — 2 drives. Two failures at once.
- • RAID 10 — 1 per mirror pair, so 2 in a 4-drive array.
- • JBOD — 0. Just spanned disks, no protection.
